THE TARANAKI International FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

The programme offers an exciting range of dance, music and theatre. There are performance and workshops to attract students of all ages from primary through to secondary school students.

Please note some workshop numbers will be limited due to space and teaching ratios.

LANTERN PARADE
To launch the festival, over 700 Lanterns designed and created by Taranaki children and artists will illuminate the mid-winter night to mark the salubrious opening of the 2009 Taranaki International Arts Festival.
The people of Taranaki are invited to gather their family and friends and join in the warm glow.

FestiveART
“A VIEW TO WINTER WONDERLAND”

Extending students imagination through visual form from the obvious to the surreal. An exhibition of selected ‘art works’ from Taranaki school students of all ages. A View to Winter Wonderland could be looking from a plane, out a window, through a door, looking through binoculars or a pin hole, maybe a microscope?
Suitable for School Groups/General Public.

BESSER & BRAVURA
From jazz to sea shanties, from Jewish music to classical, Bravura delivers a unique experience, totally affirming and spontaneous in performance. Fronted by composer Jonathan Besser (piano), Bravura includes Miranda Adams (violin), Peter Scott (bass), Nigel Gavin (guitar) and Tatiana Lantchkova (piano accordion), they are regular performers at festivals. Suitable Intermediate/ Secondary, min numbers 250.

ARTE KANELA DANCE WORKSHOP
Heralded as the most exciting and dynamic force in Australia’s flamenco music scene, Arte Kanela is steered by the gifted Tedesco brothers. Johnny Tedesco, complimented by Chantelle Caro will treat senior New Plymouth dance students with a flamenco workshop. Suitable for Senior Dance Students, LIMITED NUMBERS.

NZ TRIO
Violinist Justine Cormack, cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins, are regular international and national performers. They are active promoters of NZ Music.
Taranaki Senior Chamber Music students are invited to participate in a ‘Master Class’ with the Trio. Suitable Senior chamber music students, LIMITED NUMBERS.

TATARAKIHI - Taranaki Primary Schools Kapa Haka Competition
Schools from around Maunga Taranaki will gather at the TSB Stadium to celebrate culture through kapa haka performance and competition. The overall winning team from the competitive section will be eligible to represent Taranaki at the New Zealand Primary Schools National Kapa Haka Competition. Suitable Primary & Intermediate School

Ward-Lealand

New Zealand actor Jennifer Ward-Lealand trained at Auckland’s influential Theatre Corporate, and has worked extensively in theatre, film and television for over 25 years. Senior drama students from Taranaki schools are invited to join a ‘Master Class” led by Jennifer. Suitable for Senior drama students, LIMITED NUMBERS.

STRIKE PERCUSSION
This exciting all-male stage show enraptures and inspires students of all ages, with its inventiveness, energetic physicality and musical intricacy and power. Based around STRIKE’s trademark ‘cube,’ a scaffolding set is adorned with a myriad of traditional and non traditional percussion instruments from cymbals and drums to hubcaps. Suitable for Primary/Intermediate/Secondary, min numbers 250 per school.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE
Two actors are devising a show in a school hall when an audience arrives unexpectedly! Their play is not ready to be shown in public but instead they decide to share their play-making process with the audience. Co.Theatre Physical employs comedy, dexterous physicality and diverse skills to bring you dynamic, educative theatre! Suitable for Primary/Intermediate, minimum number is 125.

SPEECH SNATCHER
A Show About Speeches...
A girl is preparing her speech for school when a word thief gobbles half of the words on her page. Her speech is ruined! It now reads like gobbledey gook, silly-speak, crazy-talk! To retrieve vital information she chases the word thief and experiences a journey of Universal proportions! Suitable for Primary/Intermediate, minimum number is 125.

Duration 50 minutes
