Arte
Kanela
(Australia)
Theatre Royal, TSB Showplace
8pm July 24-26
Melbourne flamenco act Arte Kanela mesmerised a packed house at the
Theatre Royal on opening night of the Taranaki Festival of the Arts
on Friday evening.
Composer Richard Tedesco, who has been playing flamenco guitar since
he was 9-years-old captured the authentic sound of Spain, while his
brother, Johnny, and fellow dancer Chantelle Cano, wowed the audience
with a stunning array of staccato footwork.
A graceful beauty, Cano, whose smooth flowing movements were almost
hypnotic, was the perfect embodiment of the music.
But as the beats grew faster, so did Cano’s remarkable
footwork, dazzling the audience with her precision and control
in every step.
When the initial dance came to an end, the toe-tapping beats
of the Tedesco brothers’ music was alone enough to charm
the audience, while they waited in anticipation for what was
to come.
And they were not disappointed when Johnny Tedesco, who is
the troop’s
choreographer, took to the stage, introducing an electrifying
variety of unique dance moves that were performed at such speed;
they almost
looked part of an illusion.
But it was the rhythmic patterns of a zapateado dance that
drew gasps from the audience – an intricate stomping
similar to tap dance, which left many spellbound.
At the end of the hour-long performance, all that could be heard was
the thunderous sound of hundreds of feet stomping on the wooden floor
in appreciation.
A superbly polished act, Arte Kanela put on a performance that
will not be easily forgotten.
